The Challenge

Our team, the Kilimanjaro - Ascent for Arthritis team, is organising a series of fundraising and awareness events culminating in a climb to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in July 2007. This inspirational climb will illustrate how many of life's obstacles, arthritis included, can be overcome with careful planning, determination and teamwork.

Why Arthritis
Arthritis is a major cause of disability and chronic pain for 3.4 million Australians. Inaccurately, many people believe arthritis to be a simple consequence of age and degeneration when, in fact, the disease affects people of all age groups - 60 per cent are of working age. There is also a misconception that all forms of arthritis should be treated with rest and immobility. Although arthritis is a condition without a current cure, one of the best ways to treat arthritis is to remain active, stay mobile and to exercise regularly.

Project Aims
The aim of our project is to challenge the misconceptions around arthritis, increase awareness of the condition and help people manage their arthritis proactively and positively. At present there is insufficient government funding for arthritis relative to its impact on Australian society. Our project aims to generate charitable funds for the establishment of a scientific research grant towards a cure and a better future for those with arthritis. Arthritis Australia has approved the project and is involved in raising awareness and networking as the recipient partner. For more information about our project, please click through our site.
